Standard Life could quit Scotland if it goes independent

Standard Life today became the first major Scottish company to warn it could leave the country if it votes Yes to independence in September.

The FTSE 100 insurance giant, which employs 5,000 people in Scotland, said it was considering how it could move parts of operations from Edinburgh to London.

Gerry Grimstone, Standard Life’s chairman, said: “It is appropriate that we have carefully thought through the potential consequences if Scotland were to become an independent nation.”

RBS, another major employer in Scotland, said it was monitoring the situation. Boss Ross McEwan said: “We believe in letting the Scots decide and do not intend to get involved politically.”
