The son of a woman who died after she was knocked down by her own car as it was being stolen has said "the world has lost a great person" as he paid tribute to her.

Lynda Hankey, 42, of Wigan, suffered fatal head injuries after she was flung into the air off the bonnet of her yellow MG when the raider drove straight at her and sped off.

Her son, Nathaniel Daniel Hankey, 23, said in a statement released by Greater Manchester Police: "Mum was one of the most loving people on the planet.

"The world has lost a great person and she will be missed by everybody."

She had started running the engine of her vehicle and had briefly returned to her house to pick up her girlfriend, Jamie Hudson, and Ms Hudson's five-year-old son.

They then watched in horror as Ms Hankey was hit as she stepped into the road in a bid to prevent the theft of her car.

In her tribute, Ms Hudson, 31, added: "She was the love of my life.

"I am missing her every second of the day. She was a fantastic partner and I only wish I had time to make her my wife."

Ms Hudson described Ms Hankey as an "excellent" stepmother to her five-year-old son Tyler, before adding: "Love you always and forever my darling."

A 23-year-old man, from the Leigh area of Wigan, arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday remains in police custody for questioning. Another man, 22, has been released without charge.
