Soldier killed in Afghanistan blast

12 April 2012

A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier, from the Queens Royal Lancers Regiment, was killed in a suspected mine strike on his vehicle.

It was providing security to a supply convoy returning to Camp Bastion from the town of Gareshk when the incident happened.

A second soldier was injured in the blast and is receiving treatment at the Camp Bastion field hospital.

Next of kin have been informed, an MoD spokesman said.

"The soldier was evacuated to the medical facility at Camp Bastion, but tragically was declared dead on arrival," the MoD spokesman said.

Lieutenant Colonel Sarto LeBlanc, spokesman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf), said: "We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the soldier who died, and those who were wounded, while working to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan.

"We have lost a valuable member of our team and this loss will be felt across our command."

The incident takes the number of British personnel to die in Afghanistan since 2001 to 94.
