Satellite broadcaster BSkyB is to create more than 550 jobs at a new customer service centre.

The call centre, in Stockport, Greater Manchester, is being opened in June "to meet increased demand for TV, broadband and home phone services", a statement added.

Chris Stylianou, who runs Sky's customer centres, said: "Sky is excited about finding a new home in Stockport and I am delighted to be able to announce these new opportunities."

The new customer centre, to be based in a new building in Stockport town centre, will be in addition to Sky's centres in Livingston, Dunfermline, Uddingston, Leeds, Osterley and Shepton Mallet.

The company already employs more than 16,000 people across the UK and Ireland and will begin recruiting for the new jobs in March.

Mr Stylianou added: "We look forward to recruiting a great team here in Stockport and to making a real contribution to the local community."

Sky's services reach more than 9.7 million homes across the UK and Ireland and, in addition to providing a high definition (HD) TV service, the company said it has also been the UK's fastest-growing broadband and telephony company over the last two years.

Stockport MP Ann Coffey said: "This is great news for Stockport. I am delighted that such a prestigious company as Sky has recognised what Stockport has to offer.

"I am sure the new Sky centre will be able to recruit a committed and enthusiastic local workforce to fill these jobs."
