Sister of Crowborough crash victim: We hope horror video saves lives

Jason Collie13 October 2015

The sister of one of two young men killed in a drug-fuelled crash that was captured in harrowing footage said she hopes the film can help save lives.

Driver Kyle Careford, 20, and his friend Michael Owen, 21, died instantly when the Renault Clio they were in crashed at high speed into a church wall.

Mr Owen videoed their journey on a mobile phone as they sped at up to 90mph while high on drugs along country lanes before crashing in Crowborough, East Sussex.

Mr Owen's sister Rachel Weston said watching the footage "broke her heart" but that she hoped it would help make people slow down.

She said: "If we can save one person's life - whether it be a young boy, a young girl, an elderly person, a driver who's been on the road for 30 years and thinks they know all the rules of the road - if we can save one person because they slowed down because of this video, and the impact, then that is our aim.

"That is why we have released this."

Asked how difficult it was to watch the footage again, she told 5 News: "It broke my heart.

"He's my only sibling and that crunch at the end ... that resembled all our hearts as a massive metaphor.

"It just highlights the dangers of speeding."

The footage, released by Sussex Police with the permission of the two men's families, has been viewed more than 3.5 million times on YouTube.

Mr Owen - the father of a five-year-old girl - and Mr Careford, both from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, are heard chatting and laughing as music plays in the background.

Just as the footage fades, Mr Owen is heard saying: "We're doing 90, boy, slow down."

The film was shown at their inquest in Hastings last week.
