Scotland braced for more flooding

12 April 2012

More flooding is expected across Scotland after another night of heavy rain.

On Wednesday the Scottish Environment Protection Agency had 16 severe flood warnings in place, and more rain was predicted to fall.

The worst affected areas were Perth and Kinross, Tayside and Strathclyde.

Late on Wednesday homes in the village of Milnathort near Kinross were evacuated after the River Queich burst its banks.

Several other rivers had also burst their banks flooding local areas in Perthshire.

And in the Renfrewshire area a number of people had to be rescued from buildings and cars due to floodwater.

Kingussie High School near Aviemore in the Highlands also had to be evacuated after the River Gynack burst its banks and flooded the playground.

A number of roads throughout Scotland were closed due to the flooding and the A82 near Spean Bridge was shut due to a landslip.

Forecasters said the situation would get worse before beginning to improve later in the day.

Police urged drivers in affected areas to proceed with extreme caution.
