Raac school closures: Updated list of schools with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete

Here is the updated list of schools affected by potentially dangerous Raac

At least 214 schools around the UK have been impacted by the Raac (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) crisis, according to new information from the Department for Education.

Based on the latest DfE updates, more than 40 schools have been added to the list since the last review.

In recent weeks, the Raac issue has disrupted the education of thousands of pupils, with many being forced to learn from home or move.

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) is a lightweight building material used from the 1950s up to the mid-1990s, but is now assessed to be at risk of collapse.

You can also see the full list of education settings with confirmed Raac on the government website.

The Department for Education has previously said it had contacted 104 more schools after 52 of the initial 156 educational settings containing the concrete had taken protective steps. At the time, Gillian Keegan, the secretary of state for education, said 1,500 schools are yet to return building surveys.

The list covers state-funded schools, maintained nursery schools, and further education colleges.

It is divided into two sections, according to the action currently being taken to deal with the concrete.

At three other schools, Brandhall Primary School, The Appleton School, and Cockermouth School, Raac was present but, following initial tests, have now been classed as not having the dangerous concrete.

How many schools are being closed?

There are more than 214 schools which have been confirmed as containing the Raac type of concrete, according to the DfE’s most recent list (learn more about the concrete here).

The department previously confirmed that 52 buildings were at risk of a sudden collapse, thus steps were taken to keep them safe, like bolstering the concrete.

The DfE previously said: “In most cases, children will be able to continue attending school as normal.”

How do I know if my child’s school is affected?

Our list has mentioned all the schools impacted but schools and other education settings will let parents know directly if there is any change to the start of term.

Not all schools that employ Raac in their structures must shut down.

Some buildings might only have concrete in one, for instance, forcing the closure of a few classes.

If the concrete is in a limited enough area, other people might be able to continue their schooling with little interruption.

Why are schools closing?

The Government has decided to close more than 100 education buildings that have been built using concrete prone to collapse.

Schools with this material have been told they have to introduce new safety measures to make sure students are safe.

The Government hasn’t outlined a timeline for replacing the Raac.

The decision was made after a National Audit Office study in June revealed that the risk of injury or death from a school building collapse was “very likely and critical” in buildings that contained Raac.

How will closures affect students?

Talking about the closures’ impact on students, Ms Keegan explained: “We must take a cautious approach because that is the right thing to do for both pupils and staff.

“The plan we have set out will minimise the impact on pupil learning and provide schools with the right funding and support they need to put mitigations in place to deal with Raac.”

What is Raac and when was it used?

The material, known as reinforced with autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac), is a lightweight material. The Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) has noted that: “Although called ’concrete’, (Raac) is very different from traditional concrete and, because of the way in which it was made, much weaker.

“Raac was used in schools, colleges, and other building construction from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. It may therefore be found in any school and college building (educational and ancillary) that was either built or modified in this time period.”
