Safety warning over school run

12 April 2012

More than 460,000 parents have had a car accident while taking a child on the school run in the last five years, a study has revealed.

And nearly a quarter of those surveyed were unaware of the legal seat restraint requirements for children in vehicles.

Commissioned by Sainsbury's Bank, the poll showed that more than five million drivers in the UK go on the school run, with 8.30am to 9am the busiest time.

Steve Johnson, head of car insurance at the bank, said: "Our research shows that one in four of those driving their children to school has admitted that the children were not always securely fastened in a child car seat or booster.

"The familiarity of the route coupled with the often short distances travelled may make parents feel overly confident and therefore less aware of the dangers involved in the school run."

He added: "As parents, we need to treat every journey in the same manner, regardless of the length or familiarity of the journey and take extra care to make sure the seats and boosters are correctly positioned and fastened."
