The Royal Mint has released its official Remembrance Day coin ahead of commemorations on Saturday.

Stephen Taylor, a graphic designer at the Royal Mint, said his artwork was inspired by the world-famous war poem 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae.

He said: "I started my research by looking at words and symbols that are connected with Armistice Day but after realising the poppy is by far the most synonymous with these traditions, that became my focus.

"I chose poppies with a realistic, wildflower quality, echoing the flowers John McCrae would have seen growing up when he wrote his poem. It's a poignant reminder of the brave men and women who lost their lives.

"These plants represent the chance for new life to grow from their sacrifice."

This is Stephen's second work to feature on a UK coin, after he created the reverse side of the coin released to celebrate the Queen becoming the UK's longest reigning monarch in 2015.

Anne Jessopp, chief executive of the Royal Mint, said: "Stephen's design instantly resonates in the mind of individuals the tribute many pay for servicemen and women across the world that have lost their lives in conflicts past and present."

The coins is available in Silver Proof for £82.50 and Brilliant Uncirculated finishes at £17. A donation from every purchase of the coin is made to the Imperial War Museum.
