The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were presented with a rare coconut famed for its erotic shape while on honeymoon in the Seychelles.

The unusual souvenir was presented to the royal couple by the Seychelles foreign minister after their 10-day stay on the north island.

A spokeswoman for Jean Paul Adam said the newlyweds were given the gift just before they flew home.

The famous coco-de-mer, from a palm tree once believed to grow in the depths of the sea, is the largest seed in the plant kingdom and is endemic to the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles, according to Unesco.

Legend has it that sailors, who first saw the unique double coconut floating in the sea, imagined that it resembled a woman's disembodied buttocks.

The coco-de-mer trees dominate the skyline of the islands and and the Unesco website says a rich body of legend has developed around the species including that the nut has religious significance and in the 19th century the British General Gordon produced detailed 'proof' that the Vallee de Mai was the Garden of Eden and that coco-de-mer was the tree of knowledge.
