Fewer than half of all working-age adults are saving enough for a comfortable retirement, a report has indicated.
A survey of more than 5,000 people found that 49% are setting aside adequate sums for their old age, compared to 46% in a poll last year.
Of the 51% who face a shortfall, almost a quarter have no savings at at all, the Scottish Widows UK Pensions Index revealed.
And despite slightly improved levels of provision, the number of working-age adults heading for an easy retirement is still 6% lower than in 2005.
It means that many people currently in employment could be heading for a retirement living on less than the 70% to 80% of working-age income deemed necessary by Scottish Widows.
Ian Naismith, head of pensions market development at Scottish Widows, said: "While confidence seems to be returning slowly to the pensions market, 51% of those who should be preparing for retirement are still not saving adequately.
"Despite pensions being front page news for much of the past year, there is still some way to go before the nation is truly on track - when you strip out those people that are relying on final-salary schemes, three-quarters of the UK population is still not on track for a comfortable retirement."
Research found that around two-thirds of those that are saving enough are men, with only 31% of women making adequate preparations for their retirement.
The self-employed were also identified as an "at risk" group with less than a third setting aside enough cash for a comfortable income post work.
Almost a third of savers quizzed in the survey said they did not know what their main source of income would be in their retirement.
