Retailers benefit from warm weather

Soaring temperatures across the country have sparked a run on the staples of a British summer, with retailers reporting a spike in sales of disposable barbecues, fresh meat and strawberries.

Supermarket shelves have also been well stocked with sun cream before this weekend's balmy conditions.

Temperatures are expected to reach 30C (86F) in parts of southern England.

Waitrose said its burger sales are up nearly 90% this week, with sales of sausages and their vegetarian equivalents also surging. It predicts a further boost to sales if Andy Murray wins the Wimbledon men's singles final tomorrow.

"The 'Pimmsometer', our internal barometer of good weather, is starting to move up a gear with sales up by 90%," a supermarket spokesman said.

"Sales of rose wine and cider are up by 50% with the predicted heat wave this weekend. And if Andy Murray continues his success to win ... on Sunday, we would expect sales of sparkling wine to soar too."

If temperatures reach predicted levels, the store said it expects to shift six times as much sun cream as normal and three times as much insect repellent.

Murray's success at SW19 has also seen tennis fans reach for the strawberries, with Tesco reporting a 20% increase in demand on the days he plays, compared with those on which he does not.

Over the weekend, the retailer says it expects to sell 1.5 million cucumbers, 250,000 disposable barbecues and 1 million tubs of ice cream.

"It looks like most of the country will be cooking up a storm in their gardens this weekend thanks to the promise of the first prolonged stretch of brilliant weather this year," Tesco meat buyer Amar Gohil said.

"We think this weekend will see the highest barbecue food and drink-related sales of the year and we've ordered in extra stocks just in case.

"Britain has enjoyed rising temperatures this week but this time it's set to peak at the weekend, which is fantastic as it often does when most of us are hard at work."

Superdrug predicts it will sell 30% more sun care products this weekend compared with the same weekend last year and double compared with last weekend.
