Millions of customers are locked out of their NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland online banking services, after the websites were hit by a major outage.

According to website Downdetector.co.uk the outage for both sites occurred shortly after 9am this morning.

The banks, which are both owned by NatWest Holdings, have between them more than 25 million customers.

NatWest issued a statement on Twitter just before 3pm, saying that the website is still unavailable.

RBS also said their website was still out of service.

Customers are being urged to use the mobile app to access their accounts or contact them if you need urgent help.

A spokesperson for RBS and NatWest customers homepages are currently unable to link to online banking services although direct links to services do work.

If customers use direct Online Banking links they will be able to access their mobile apps, telephone banking and ATMs, or visit their local branch, she said.

“We are aware that customers are currently experiencing issues accessing our websites and online banking login pages," the spokesperson added.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We are aware of the problem and are working hard to fix it."

Several Twitter users said when they tried to log onto banking services they got the message: "RBS HTTP Error: 502. HTTP_BAD_GATEWAY"

One customer tweeted NatWest saying: "I got this error message when trying to login to my accounts "RBS HTTP Error: 502" - Will this be solved soon? I may be going overdrawn today."

Others took to social media to ask for more information about the outage.

Another Twitter user said: "Your whole online banking service is not loadable, been trying for the last hour.....What's up??

Adam Purbrick said: "I'm moving banks" while Joanne Doyle asked: "Any idea when bank line will be back up and running, wages need to be paid!"
