An adorable pug was rescued from a well by firefighters who used a bag of food attached to a rope to lift her out.

The three-year-old pooch, named Kiki, made the 40m plunge down the hole in her family's back garden late on Tuesday evening.

Firefighters devised a unique plan to rescue her which meant filling a large kit bag with Kiki’s favourite dog food, lowering it down into the well and waiting for her to crawl in to eat.

Once she was successfully lured in, two firefighters then carefully lifted her out of the hole.

Miraculously the young pup did not appear to have sustained any serious injuries and jumped straight out of the bag to play around her garden in Rainham, Kent.

Graham Porter, who led the rescue, said: “It was definitely an interesting rescue and we’re really pleased we managed to reach Kiki safely.

“It’s a miracle she didn’t appear to have any injuries after falling that far, but she seemed ok and enjoyed a cuddle with the crew post rescue... all’s well that ends well.”

The team of four firefighters were praised for their inventive idea after posting photos of themselves with the animal on social media.

The rescue mission took around 45 minutes, with firefighters arriving to the find the dog just before 8pm.

Kiki’s owners planned to take her to the vets to be checked.
