£16.9m windfall for healthy eating

12 April 2012

A scheme to promote healthy eating to schoolchildren and their families will get a £16.9 million Lottery boost.

It aims to transform the diets of more than 150,000 people and turn 180 schools into examples of good cooking and eating.

The grant will help pay for school cooks to get training in how to prepare seasonal, local and organic food.

Pupils in the chosen schools will visit organic farms and take part in vegetable gardening projects.

The scheme, which is led by the Soil Association, will also promote healthy food to the wider community via food festivals, community farm visits and food tasting weeks.

Soil Association policy director Peter Melchett said: "The award will help give hundreds of thousands of children and their parents the skills and knowledge to cook and eat healthily and affordably, as well as the power to influence the whole food chain."

The money was allocated by the Big Lottery Fund, one of the grant-giving bodies of the National Lottery.
