People in the UK have amassed a total repair bill of more the £1 billion over the last three years from cracking their mobile phone screen, a new survey suggests.

One in five mobile phone users in the UK have cracked their screen by dropping them in the same time period, according to a YouGov poll.

Young people are most likely to damage to their mobiles with a third of users aged 18 to 24 having cracked their screen, along with 32 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds.

Despite this, a huge 77 per cent of all UK mobile phone users have no insurance for their device and only 56 per cent cover their phones with protective cases.

The research also showed that iPhones are the most vulnerable to damage, with 43 per cent of UK consumers with an iPhone damaging or breaking their device in the last three years.

Ben Wood of leading mobile analyst firm CCS Insight, said: “This research shows there is demand by some users for more rugged devices and we see this as a growth area in the smartphone market over the next few years.”

The survey was carried out by YouGov on behalf of Bullitt Group UK smartphone manufacturer Bullitt Group, global mobile device licensee for Caterpillar, surveyed 2,000 UK adults.
