Prince Louis Arthur Charles! New royal baby name finally revealed

Robert Jobson27 April 2018

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today ended days of speculation by revealing the name of their new baby son as Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge.

William and Kate's third child was born on Monday, St George's Day, weighing in at 8lb 7oz.

The couple showed off their new son to adoring crowds for the first time on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary's hospital, Paddington, hours after the birth.

But they kept the world waiting for four days before announcing the name they had chosen for their newborn son.

The name is clearly in honour of Lord Louis Mountbatten who both Prince Philip and Prince Charles regarded as a great mentor. Charles often referred to the war hero - murdered by the IRA - as his “honorary grandfather."

Mountbatten counselled Charles on a great many things, most famously his love life.

It was also Mountbatten who had arranged the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Dartmouth Royal Naval College on 22 July 1939.

Included in these plans were Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, who were to be entertained by his nephew, Cadet Prince Philip of Greece while their parents toured the college.

It was the first meeting of the then 13-year old Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The bookies said the name Louis sat way back in 10th place in terms of bets placed - being as big as 20/1 following the birth.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Prince Louis has caught both bookies and punters by surprise. With it being one of Prince George's middle names fans didn’t see it as an obvious front runner for Kate and Wills second son."

“It looks like we made the right decision to keep betting open until the very end for royal punters, rather than suspending the market or paying out early due to the rumour mill going into overdrive, as we so often saw over the last few days.”

Bookies made Albert the new favourite name for the Royal baby after a web page on the official family website sent the public into a frenzy on Thursday night.

Some bookies even closed name betting on William and Kate’s second son on Thursday night, with a Coral spokesman stating: "We are expecting to discover the outcome tomorrow and at the moment Prince Albert looks likely."

The message “Access denied” and “You are not authorised to access this page” appeared when trying to access the web address www.royal.uk/prince-albert.

Others said it was actually just a page set up for those looking for information on Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert.

It prompted a number of Betfair punters to put their money on the moniker.

William and Kate proudly introduced their baby son to the world on Monday following his safe arrival.

Then William told reporters that they would "very soon" to hear the name chosen for the little boy.

He jokingly hinted that the newborn may be called Alexander during his public engagement at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday to attend the Anzac Day commemorations.

Both Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s names were announced two days after their arrivals.

Kensington Palace announced the baby's name on Friday morning.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles," Kensington Palace said in a statement.

"The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge."
