The deaths of a London TV executive and his daughter in a speedboat accident prompted calls today for compulsory training.

Nick Milligan, head of advertising sales at BSkyB and from Wandsworth, and his eight-year-old daughter Emily were killed when they were run over by their own powerboat near Padstow on Sunday afternoon.

His wife Victoria, 39, and their son Kit, four, face losing their legs after suffering wounds from the boat’s propeller during the bank holiday weekend accident.

Mr Milligan’s two other children, Amber 12, and Olivia, 10, were less seriously injured after watersports instructor Charlie Toogood leapt into the powerboat and cut its engine. Devon and Cornwall police are investigating if the boat’s “kill cord” had been pulled.

Steve Arkell, managing director of APV Marine, which makes the speedboat, said all owners should be expected to take the Royal Yachting Association’s powerboat course. A friend of Mr Milligan said he would have taken all safety precautions.
