Police are investigating after a 28-year-old man died following an assault at a National Trust property previously used to film the hit show Bridgerton.

Lincolnshire Police said they were "carrying out enquiries" at a number of locations in the county and neighbouring Nottinghamshire including Belton House.

They said: "Part of our investigation is around establishing the exact cause of death, which will be done following a formal Home Office post mortem examination at some point next week.

"There will be no further updates until that aspect of our investigation is concluded.

"A 29-year-old man arrested in connection with this incident has been released on police bail while those enquiries are carried out."

It comes after officers received a report of an altercation at the 17th century country house near Grantham on November 30.

The 28-year-old was reportedly involved in an altercation there before returning home, where he later became unwell and died.

It is believed the assault happened in a section of the grounds that was closed to the public and that the two men knew each other.

Officers said they were not members of staff or volunteers for the National Trust, nor visitors to Belton House.

The house, which is Grade I listed, was built between 1685 and 1687 by Sir John Brownlow and is surrounded by formal gardens within a wider wooded park.

It stood in for the residence of King George in the filming of the Netflix period drama after location scouts recommended it over Kew Palace in southwest London.

Speaking at the time, Netflix's Supervising Location Manager Tony Hood said the house was "a really fantastic find for us".

He said: "It’s a property with really lovely grounds. The interiors really do lean towards this period."
