The Prime Minister has shown he is not afraid of getting his "shiny shoes dirty" as he visited flood victims and declared "we can do more".

David Cameron made two visits in Cornwall, which saw heavy rainfall in the early hours of Wednesday rip through the small villages in the south of the county.

He went to Mevagissey where he spoke to members of the emergency services and council staff who are involved in the massive clean-up operation.

He then went on to Pentewan where he met residents affected by the flooding.

He was taken to the home of Val Page, 63, which is still covered in a thick layer of mud. "He couldn't believe the state it was in and he basically said how sorry he was," she said.

"I'm just grateful that someone is taking an interest in our little community. I was a bit worried that we would be forgotten as we're not as big as other places.

"He even walked through here: it's very slippery in here and very muddy, but he was quite willing to get nice shiny shoes dirty. I think the whole village should be pleased he came to see us."

Mr Cameron also met with a dozen local people at the Ship Inn, which had its first two floors affected by the flood water.

A year on from the Cockermouth flooding in Cumbria, some people are still out of their homes and after his meeting the Prime Minister was asked what guarantee he could offer that would not happen in Cornwall.

Mr Cameron said: "We've got to make sure we get people back in their homes soon. I've been incredibly impressed here by the work of the emergency services, and Cornwall Council going door to door helping people out."
