A plumber's daughter from Borehamwood has been tipped as a future film star.

Karla Crome, 23, is one of 31 rising talents among the country’s actors, writers and directors featured in this year’s Screen International magazine Stars of Tomorrow showcase.

The actress, who was brought up in the Hertfordshire commuter belt, landed her big breakthrough last year when she was cast alongside US star Chloë Sevigny in the Sky Atlantic mini-series Hit And Miss.

Today she told how she progressed from school plays at her Elstree primary to being cast as the 16-year-old caretaker of Sevigny’s transgender assassin.

Crome said: “I briefly flirted with the idea of more stable career choices but they never excited me. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but I remember doing school plays in primary school and feeling at home on the stage.”

She is now shooting the next series of TV’s Misfits. The Stars of Tomorrow showcase is in its ninth year and has an impressive track record for spotting talent.

Past selections have included Robert Pattinson, Carey Mulligan and new Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield.

Other actors highlighted include Welsh actor Tom Harries, who has been seen in the Minnie Driver film Hunky Dory, and former Billy Elliot stage star Tom Holland, who was 16 last month. He has been cast in Kevin Macdonald’s How I Live Now.

Fionnuala Halligan, who compiled the list, said: “It’s always a surprise to see how much talent is out there. We could have filled several magazines over.”
