12 April 2012

A pilot died after his privately-owned Second World War fighter plane crashed during an air show.

The man had been taking part in a display on the first day of the Shoreham Air Show in West Sussex. His plane crashed into a field about a mile north of the airfield and close to Lancing College.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "At single-crewed Hurricane aircraft taking part in an aerial display at the Shoreham Air Show crashed into a field, killing the pilot.

"Emergency services put in place contingency plans at the air show and are on the scene. No other planes were involved. Next of kin have been informed."

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been informed.

The show was organised by the Royal Air Forces Association. The theme for this year's event was the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Display pilots and the organisers of the air show confirmed that the event will continue on Sunday.

Sussex Police was asking anybody with any video footage of the incident to hand a copy in to their nearest police station.
