Piers Morgan slams 'sick' trolls targeting Madeleine McCann's parents saying ‘it makes me puke’

Piers Morgan slammed "sick" trolls for targeting Madeleine McCann's parents Kate and Gerry McCann after police identified a German man as a "significant suspect" in the case.

The Good Morning Britain presenter discussed the latest developments in the case on today's programme.

He described the disappearance of Madeleine as "heartbreaking" and said he hoped her parents "find some peace and some resolution".

"It must be an utter living torment for the rest of your life," said Mr Morgan.

"To all those trolling them, honestly, I’m reading this stuff. It’s making me puke. Just stop it. Leave them alone. To have a child taken from you, and potentially abused and murdered, shut up."

Co-host Susanna Reid added: "They’ve suffered an unimaginable tragedy".

In 2014, police investigated more than 80 pages of horrific Facebook messages, Tweets and forum posts aimed at Madeleine's parents.

Mr McCann said he had “grave concerns” about letting his nine-year-old twins use the internet after threats of violence and kidnapping and called for an example to be made of "vile" internet trolls.

Madeleine disappeared from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal on the evening of May 3, 2007 when she was three-years-old.

The Met and counterparts in Germany have appealed for information about the man and his movements as they seek to solve the 13-year mystery.

On Wednesday, Scotland Yard named the 43-year-old sex offender from Germany as a suspect.

Detectives leading the search for Madeleine said that the man – who has not been identified – was in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on the night the then three-year-old vanished.

A statement from Madeleine’s parents, read by Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell, said: “We welcome the appeal today regarding the disappearance of our daughter Madeleine.

“We would like to thank the police forces involved for their continued efforts in the search for Madeleine.

“All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.

“We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive, but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know as we need to find peace.”

They added that he completed a 30-minute phone call only shortly before she went missing on May 3, 2007 and had re-registered his 1993 Jaguar XJR6 car the following day.

Photos of the vehicle and a distinctive early 1980s VW T3 Westfalia camper van that the man was also using at the time have been issued by police in an attempt to uncover more information about his movements before and after Madeleine vanished.
