Piers Morgan has donated £10,000 to a 99-year-old war veteran who is raising half a million pounds to support the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

Captain Tom Moore, who was a tank officer in India and Sumatra in World War Two, turns 100 on April 30 and is aiming to walk two and a half kilometres before his birthday.

The war veteran, who is taking on the challenge by doing laps of his 25-metre garden, has raised more than £450,000 so far.

Speaking to Mr Moore on Good Morning Britain on Monday, Morgan said he would be donating £10,000 to the fundraising page.

Mr Moore said: "It's been absolutely fabulous that people who have been so kind to give so much money to the National Health Service because if ever you've been in hospital, you know that the nurses and all the staff... are all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to answer their duties.

"They must be a little bit apprehensive, a bit like Daniel entering into the lion's den, because they don't know what's going to happen but they know they're in for a pretty tough day - but by gum they'll brave it."

Mr Morgan said it was a pleasure to speak to Mr Moore and thanked him.

He added: "Good luck. I want to get you over the line today... here's what I'm going to do, Tom. I'm going to put £10,000 of my own money into your fundraising today and I hope that encourages everyone watching at home."

Mr Moore, from Keighley in Yorkshire, broke his hip a while ago, which kept him mostly in the house even before coronavirus. He now gets around with a walking frame.

He told BBC Breakfast on Friday: "I can get about, but slowly. As long as people don't want me to run about too fast I can manage."
