Pair released by Rhys probe police

12 April 2012

Two teenagers arrested in connection with firearms offences by detectives hunting the killer of 11-year-old Rhys Jones in Liverpool have been released by police.

The two were originally arrested on November 20 in connection with the Liverpool boy's murder in August but were released on bail.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Two males, aged 18 and 16 years, from Croxteth, who were rearrested in connection with firearms offences by detectives investigating the murder of Rhys Jones, have been released on police bail pending further inquiries."

Both suspects had been taken into custody for questioning at police stations on Merseyside.

Football-mad Rhys died in his mother Melanie's arms after being shot through the neck in the car park of the Fir Tree Pub in Croxteth Park.

The shooting - which police believe may have been part of a gang feud which Rhys innocently walked into - caused national outrage.

Despite more than 20 arrests and a BBC Crimewatch reconstruction, no-one has been charged with the murder.

Detectives have repeatedly been given the name of one teenage suspect alleged to be the killer, who rode from the scene on a mountain bike and with his face covered by a hood.

Last week, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith visited Rhys's family for a private meeting about the investigation's progress.

She was in Liverpool to announce a planned ban on deactivated guns when she said the police were doing all they could to catch the schoolboy's killer.
