Otter heads out on midnight stroll down Salisbury high street

A surprise visitor enjoyed some window shopping on Salisbury high street.

CCTV footage captured an otter on a relaxed stroll past shops including New Look and Jones Bootmaker.

A volunteer for Salisbury City Council was stunned to spot the marine mammal as it explored the empty centre at around midnight last week.

In a Facebook post, the council said it was “delighted” that the town’s medieval high street was “being enjoyed both day and night by a variety of visitors”.

It said the recording showed how skilled its CCTV operators were at “noticing the unusual”.

Social media users shared their joy at the clip, with one writing: This is awesome!... This footage should be sent in to The BBC Springwatch. They would love to see this.

“What a once in a lifetime sight! Fabulous!”

While another commented: “Wonderful.... great to see the city recovering like this.”

And another offered a fitting pun: “I think he was looking for Ottakars book shop, but hadn’t realised it’s now Waterstones!”

Another offered a more sardonic response: “All the houses being built around the area forcing him to live in the city centre.

“He obviously doesn’t know the cost of renting.”
