Northern Ireland council forced to spend more than £1,000 to correct rogue Charles Dickens apostrophe

Rogue apostrophe: the poster for a play of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations

A Northern Ireland council has been forced to shell out more than £1,000 to remove a rogue apostrophe from adverts for a Charles Dickens play.

Posters promoting an outdoors performance of Great Expectations referred to the 19th century author as “Charles Dicken’s”.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council had to reprint its promotional material after the error was spotted. This cost about £1,200 of taxpayers’ money, the BBC reported.

Leaflets, posters and advertising boards all had to be reproduced without the extra apostrophe in Dickens’ name.

Transport for London previously spent almost £100,000 on posters which contained a grammatical error.

Meanwhile, a self-styled “grammar vigilante” has been secretly taking to the streets of Bristol to correct bad punctuation on signs and shop fronts.

A spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council said: “To promote our outdoor theatre production of ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens, we produced a variety of advertising and publicity materials to maximise public awareness of this exciting free event. Unfortunately, due simply to human error, a misplaced apostrophe was not picked up.

"Discovering the error, we weighed up whether or not to replace the material and, given that the event was a celebration of such a literary giant and in line with our own commitment to best practice, decided that it was the right thing to do.

"We are delighted to report that the event was a huge success, with several thousand attendees enjoying the unique spectacle of ‘Great Expectations’ performed in the beautiful surroundings of Solitude Park, Banbridge.”
