No full job guarantee in LDV rescue

12 April 2012

Hundreds of workers at vanmaker LDV have been warned there is no guarantee all their jobs will be saved despite a last-minute rescue to prevent the firm going bust.

A court hearing originally expected to place the Birmingham-based firm into administration was adjourned after a judge was told Russian owners Gaz had agreed in principle to sell its entire shareholding in LDV to Malaysian giant Weststar.

Talks to complete a takeover of the firm will continue now following a Government decision to offer a loan of up to £5 million to help save the factory, which employs 850 workers.

LDV spokesman Guy Jones said the proposed deal will secure "as many jobs as possible", but he warned there was no guarantee they would all be saved.

"We hope with the launch of exciting products, we will be able to create new jobs."

Mr Jones said LDV now had an investor, and the support of the Government, but he acknowledged the motor industry was facing "unprecedented times".

The factory has been at a standstill since before Christmas and there had been growing fears about its future before Tuesday night's surprise announcement of Weststar's move.

LDV's management issued a statement thanking the Government, Birmingham Hodge Hill MP and Cabinet Office minister Liam Byrne and other "key parties" involved in helping secure a future for the firm.

"We appreciate that this is a difficult time for the Government, but this support allows time for negotiations to be concluded to secure thousands of British jobs, when the alternative would almost certainly have been the loss of them all.

"Last week the directors of LDV were forced to apply for administration to protect the assets of the business and a court hearing was processed this morning. Following the confirmation of Weststar as the investor and the support of the Government on Tuesday night, the decision was taken to delay this hearing until Wednesday May 13, when the case to continue the business will be presented."
