No further action will be taken against two men arrested over claims that evidence was hidden during the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry.

A retired Metropolitan Police officer and a serving civilian police worker have been released from bail, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

The pair were held after detectives reviewing the case uncovered material they feared was not disclosed during the original investigation.

The IPCC said officials were preparing to publish a full report revealing the circumstances of the suspected non-disclosure of information.

A spokeswoman said: "No further action will be taken against two men arrested following concerns identified by the internal Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) review of the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

"The IPCC investigation is nearing conclusion and its findings will be published in due course."

The 62-year-old former constable and 53-year-old member of police staff were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in December.

A small team of Scotland Yard detectives continues to probe the death of Mr Lawrence at the hands of a racist gang in Eltham, south-east London, in April 1993.

The arrests were the result of new evidence found by investigators that was not disclosed to two subsequent inquiries into the original police inquiry.

Kent Police undertook an inquiry in 1997 followed by the Macpherson Report in 1999, which found evidence of "institutionalised racism" in the Metropolitan Police.
