Nick Clegg filmed a bizarre pop video weeks before the election in a bizarre bid to go viral.

In a last ditch attempt to win votes for his party, the Liberal Democrat leader took to the streets of Gravesend to recreate the “I Really Like You” music video by Carly-Rae Jepson.

Playing the part of Hollywood A-lister Tom Hanks, Mr Clegg spent nearly £8,000 of party funds recreating the video shot-for-shot, The Times reported.

In a clip from the film, Mr Clegg can be seen taking selfies, dancing and high-fiving people as he walked down the street.

A senior Lib Dem told the Times: “On reflection it definitely would’ve gone viral, but probably not in the way we’d intended.

“I doubt it could’ve made the election result any worse.”

Mr Clegg reportedly left the House of Commons early to be on time for filming on March 19, missing the unveiling of the Lib Dems’ pre-election budget.

After finishing the shoot, Mr Clegg is alleged to have asked friends: “Why the f*** did I do that?”

The video was never broadcast as part of the election campaign and staff involved were sworn to secrecy over filming it.

The Lib Dems’ election expenses showed £7,800 had been paid to Create Productions of North London.

Mr Clegg resigned as leader after the disastrous election campaign for the Lib Dems ended with them losing 49 parliamentary seats.

The Lib Dems and Mr Clegg’s office both refused to comment on the video.
