Murdered backpacker Grace Millane laid to rest during funeral in Essex

The funeral of murdered British backpacker Grace Millane has taken place near her home in Essex.

Ms Millane, 22, went missing from a hostel in New Zealand on December 1 while on a “trip of a lifetime”. Her body was found a week later in the Waitakere Ranges.

Hundreds of mourners gathered for the funeral at Brentwood Cathedral on Thursday, during what the 22-year-old’s family has called “Grace’s Day”.

The University of Lincoln graduate had been travelling alone in New Zealand for a fortnight when she was killed.

On Wednesday, Miss Millane’s brother Declan posted a touching picture of him with his sister and older brother Michael on Instagram.

He previously paid tribute to his sister online by sharing a sister of them both and captioning it with the lyrics to of You Are My Sunshine

A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder and remains in custody. He will next appear in at Auckland’s High Court on January 23.
