Morrisons will trial no staff in UK store where shoppers just walk out

Lily Waddell21 July 2021

Morrisons has lifted the lid on plans to have a store with no staff in the UK.

The supermarket giant follows retailer Amazon who opened a cashless store in London in March earlier this year.

People will choose their items from the shelves and bag them without scanning anything on the tills in the shop. Shoppers will be required to download an app which they will scan before entering the store to do their weekly shop.

Payments will go through the app after cameras detect the items a customer has selected to pick up in store.

An unstaffed shop, where customers “just walk out”, will be expected to open its doors to the public before the end of the year — according to reports.

Currently it has been tested at the head office in Bradford which isn’t open to the public.

It comes after Amazon opened its first ever store without a checkout in Seattle before later opening a store without staff in London this year.

The Standard has approached a representative for Morrisons for further comment.
