Former Miss Wales and Coronation Street actress Melanie Hughes has died at the age of 39.

Husband Rick Hughes confirmed the news that his wife, who was the 1997 Miss Wales winner, had passed away.

The actress, who had roles in Coronation Street and Cold Feet, was mother to a three-year-old son and stepmother to a teenage girl.

She was from the Welsh village of Ewloe and worked at the energy firm Kingspan for the past 15 years.

Mr Hughes, 49, paid tribute to his wife to several newspapers.

He told the Daily Post: “Mel was a lovely soul, she was kind and gentle.

“Mel was so kindhearted and had time for absolutely everyone.

“We are absolutely devastated at the loss of such a wonderful spirit and will never ever forget her.”
