Meghan Markle will not have a maid of honour for her upcoming wedding to Prince Harry, it was revealed today.

The question over who would assume the prized role on May 19 has been the subject of much speculation in the lead up to the nuptials.

While Kensington Palace kept the news under wraps, it was thought that Ms Markle's long-time best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney would take up the mantle.

However, new details of the much-anticipated occasion confirmed the bride-to-be will not standing in St George's Chapel with a friend by her side.

She will be accompanied in the car to the service by her mother, Doria Ragland.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte are also expected to be involved in the wedding, the palace said, but Prince Louis — born on April 23 — will not be there.

It is thought that the children will likely serve as a page boy and bridesmaid, or flower girl, as they did in Pippa Middleton's wedding to James Matthews last year.

The pair stole the show at their aunt's wedding when George walked the aisle carrying a flower basket, while Charlotte wore an adorable flower crown for the procession.

While traditional American-style bridal parties are unusual at Royal Weddings, it was expected that the future princess would have a maid of honour as Kate Middleton did with her sister.

Several ladies were in the running for the coveted role to be the Suits actress' right-hand woman.

It was reported that the 36-year-old would choose one of her closest friends who has stood by her in the years before meeting the prince.

Topping the list of potentials was Ms Mulroney, from Canada, who lends Ms Markle her expertise in a number of things, from PR, to brand and content strategy and styling.

The 37-year-old got her footing in fashion PR at the Canadian outpost of bridal salon Kleinfeld before she began her career as a stylist.

Lindsay Roth was also thought to be a contender, having been friends with Ms Markle for more than a decade.

The pair met as students at Northwestern University and Ms Markle was Ms Roth's own maid of honour a few years ago.

Among other the other names rumoured to take the badge of honour were fashion designer Misha Nonoo, said to be the mystery matchmaker who set the couple up in July 2016, and actress Priyanka Chopra.

When asked by Harper’s Bazaar Arabia if she would be a bridesmaid in the wedding, Ms Chopra said: “If you see me there, you’ll know.”

While Royals fans might have been hoping for the Duchess of Cambridge to feature in the wedding alongside Ms Markle, the women only met in January 2017 - perhaps not leaving enough bonding time before the ceremony.

Kensington Palace said Prince Harry will not see the wedding dress until the moment Ms Markle walks into St George’s Chapel.

All three siblings of Princess Diana — Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes and Earl Spencer — will be at the ceremony and Lady Jane will give a reading.

Royals and guests will wave the couple on as they get into a landau for a 25-minute procession through the streets of Windsor after the service.

They will delay their honeymoon to an undisclosed destination, as their first public engagement as a married couple will be the week after the wedding.
