Outraged vegetarians have bitten into McDonald's new meat-free wraps to find chicken inside them.

Affected customers who bought the Spicy Veggie Wraps have taken to social media to question the issue and express their disgust at the mix-up.

The fast-food chain has admitted the situation is “not acceptable”.

One vegetarian said they “were definitely not loving it” when they made the discovery.

Speaking to the Standard, a 22-year-old customer who asked not be named after being criticised for complaining onine, said: "Obviously the top bit of the wrap is mainly just wrap and salad so I didn’t notice until I bit into the first bit of meat.

"I spat it out instantly and was so angry.

"I understand that mistakes can happen but I think people need to understand that when you’ve made a moral decision not to eat meat you’re very invested and something like this is really upsetting."

Another speaking out on Twitter wrote: “I ordered a veggie wrap and got chicken. I’m a vegetarian and I’m absolutely revolted. I feel sick, humiliated and so upset.”

A further disgruntled veggie wrote to McDonald’s and said: “Just ate some of my ‘veggie’ wrap, that has CHICKEN IN IT. You made a vegetarian eat chicken. Literally just made me throw up.”

A spokesman for McDonald’s said: “We absolutely recognise that it is not acceptable to serve meat when our vegetarian product has been ordered, and we would like to apologise to any customer who has experienced this.”

They also stated further measures had been put in place to prevent inaccurate orders being served, though expressed disappointment “mistakes are still being made”.

The new wrap was launched in January and its main ingredient is meant to be a red pesto vegetarian goujon.

It is vegetarian society approved so should be safe for consumption by non-meat eaters.

At the time of its launch McDonald’s spoke of being “thrilled” to give customers further menu choices.
