Firefighters in Manchester have been battling a huge blaze near Strangeways Prison.

Ten fire engines rushed to a mill, in Manchester city centre, at about 4.51am on Wednesday morning and are currently still trying to control the massive fire.

The fire, on Southall Street, is opposite the entrance to the infamous Strangeways Prison.

Footage of the fire shows the building well alright with thick dark smoke billowing from it.

Manchster Fire Service have said the fire measures 100m x 100m and is located in a mill which contains household furnishings.

In a statement, the emergency service said: “The upper floors and roof of the mill containing furniture is well alight and approximately measures 50m x 50m.

“Crews are tackling the blaze from height using two hydraulic platforms and multiple jets. Part of the building has collapsed.”

Manchester Evening News reporters who are on the scene have reported hearing the sound of buildings collapsing, and hearing a “loud bang” from the dramatic blaze.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said there were no reported injuries from the fire.
