Man amuses news viewers with viral walrus impersonation

A man has left viewers in stitches with an impromptu impression of a walrus during a news report.

It came after the walrus turned up on Valentia Island off the coast of Kerry, Ireland on Monday.

The marine animal, which is said to be the size of a small car, is the first that has been spotted in the country since 2004.

It is believed the creature may have fallen asleep before being swept across the Atlantic ocean onto the island.

At the beginning of an RTÉ broadcast on the sighting, Anthony Fitzgerald appeared on-camera to describe how he came across the walrus: “Suddenly I heard ‘earghhhhh, euuuurrrghhh’.”

His impression went viral after CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan’s posted a clip of the video on Twitter.

The footage, which has since garnered over 260,000 views, left social media users begging for more “RTE news about walruses.”

One man said: “This is the most Irish thing that has ever Irished. I’m completely in love. Oh dear Lord, please, please send us more of this RTE news about walruses. I just can’t. I cannot. I’m dying. I’m dead.

“This has: Old guy making walrus sounds. An adorable family with 3 ginger children, an exasperated mom who’s ‘in the doldrums from the Covid’ and her surly redheaded teen, and another old guy saying the walrus was here chasing a female. It seriously has it all,” he added.

While another said:”I still haven’t finished it [the report] cuz every time I try a new clip breaks me.”

Other Twitter users said they enjoyed the full news broadcast which featured local residents.

Alan Houlihan, who was out walking with his five-year-old daughter when he came across the “huge” walrus, also spoke to RTÉ.

He told the broadcaster:“I thought it was a seal at first and then we saw the tusks. He kind of jumped up on the rocks. He was massive.

“He was about the size of a bull or a cow, pretty similar in size. He’s big, big,” he added.
