A man was left seriously injured after his head was crushed when it became wedged in a cinema chair.

The freak accident reportedly occurred when the man dropped his phone between the seats at the Vue Cinema in Birmingham.

He bent down to pick it up and became trapped when the seat’s electric footrest clamped down on his head.

According to Birmingham Live, the man became panicked as he tried to free himself.

Eventually the footrest was broken off the chair and he was released but left with serious injuries.

The local news site quoted a source who said the man became trapped in the cinema's electric reclining Gold class seats.

They said: "He bent down to look for his phone. At this point the leg-rest was in an upright position.

“But as he stuck his head underneath to have a look, the footrest clamped down onto his head.

“He was stuck and panicking. His partner and staff tried to free him but couldn’t."

Vue International is investigating the incident.

A spokeswoman said: "We can confirm an incident took place on Friday March 9 at our Birmingham Cinema, of which a full investigation is underway. We are committed to helping and assisting those involved and respect their wishes for privacy and no publicity."
