A man who urinated on a war memorial on Remembrance Sunday just hours before commemorations began has been forced to apologise to war veterans.

The 21-year-old relieved himself on the cenotaph on Colston Avenue, Bristol, at 2.20am on Sunday.

He was detained by Avon and Somerset Police for several hours before being released on Sunday afternoon.

A force spokesman said: "He has been released with a conditional caution with a requirement that he attends a victim awareness course, which he will have to pay for.

"He is also required to send a letter of apology to the Royal British Legion.

"If he fails to comply with the conditions of the caution, his case will be referred to the courts."

The memorial featured in the Remembrance Day Parade and ceremony featuring veterans, Reserve units and cadets, led by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Lesley Alexander.

In London, the Prince of Wales led the nation in honouring the country's war dead as the Queen looked on from a balcony.

A two-minute silence took place at 11am and wreaths were laid at the foot of the Whitehall memorial.
