Man charged over knife killing

12 April 2012

A man has been charged over the murder of a 19-year-old who was stabbed outside a tower block.

Craig Marshall, 19, of Hanbury Road, Acton, west London, died in hospital on Friday morning after being attacked on Thursday night near Rufford Tower on Lexden Road, Acton.

Kandeepan Balasubramaniam, 21, of Rufford Tower, Lexden Road, will appear in custody at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Monday charged with his murder.

A 20-year-old arrested in connection with the murder has been bailed to return pending further enquiries.

The incident brought the number of teenagers killed on London's streets in 2008 to 27, up from the 26 investigated by the Metropolitan Police during the whole of last year.

Mr Marshall's mother attacked the Government over what she perceives as a lack of action over knife crime.

Clutching a photograph of her dead son outside the council flat where he lived, Sharon Marshall said: "This country is too weak. The Government has to do something but there's nothing being done.

"No other mother can go through this - I'm going to try and make a difference."

She also appealed to youngsters who carried knives to stop and think before they took them out on to the streets.

"Just think hard before you carry a knife and stab someone," she said. "You're not only taking someone's life, you're taking a whole family's life."
