A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found stabbed to death in a park.

Emergency services were called to Heaton Park in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, at around 10.15am on Friday following reports that a woman was seriously injured.

The victim died at the scene. Sources said she had been stabbed.

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

The park, a sprawling green space on the edge of Manchester which is popular with families and joggers, has been closed to the public.

Superintendent Julian Snowball, of north Manchester division, said: "I want to reassure residents and park users that we have had a large, high-visibility police presence in the area.

"The park remains closed to the public while we continue our investigations.

"Police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward."
