Man arrested as house siege ends

12 April 2012

A man has been arrested after he barricaded himself and a six-year-old girl in a house for nearly 40 hours.

Police were called to the address in the Eastfield area of Scarborough on Monday following initial reports of a domestic disturbance.

The 32-year-old man was taken into police custody for questioning after the 39-and-a-half-hour siege came to an end.

North Yorkshire Police said the young girl was being cared for at a place of safety.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The 32-year-old man was taken into police custody to assist with inquiries and the girl is being cared for at a place of safety."

Police negotiators and firearms officers were called to the house on Herdborough Road believing there was a potential threat to life.

It was thought the man had barricaded himself and the girl in a bedroom.

The road was cordoned off throughout the siege to protect members of the public.

Sources earlier named the man as Paul Eames and his parents, Margaret and David, made an emotional television appeal for him to give himself up.

Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Read, who co-ordinated the operation, said: "The primary intention of North Yorkshire Police throughout this difficult situation was to resolve the incident without harm to anybody involved."
