Man accused of 1980s double murders

12 April 2012

A man has been charged with two double murders dating back more than 20 years.

John William Cooper was charged by cold case detectives investigating the murders of Helen and Richard Thomas at Scoveston Manor, Pembrokeshire, West Wales, in December 1985 and the murders of Peter and Gwenda Dixon on the Pembrokeshire coastal path in 1989.

The 64-year-old will appear before Haverfordwest Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The bodies of brother and sister Richard and Helen Thomas were discovered at their burned-out mansion home near Milford Haven in December 1985.

Police initially thought a domestic dispute between the siblings had been the trigger for the deaths. It later became clear that Miss Thomas was killed first and her brother apparently shot dead when he returned to the manor house. Both had been blasted at close quarters with a shotgun.

Peter and Gwenda Dixon were middle-aged tourists from Witney, Oxfordshire, exploring Pembrokeshire in the summer of 1989.

Their bodies were found hidden close to a cliff path near Littlehaven six days after their disappearance. They too had been shot at close range in what appeared to be execution-style killings, with Mr Dixon's hands tied behind his back.

Dyfed Powys Police released a statement from the Dixon family which welcomed the charges.

They said: "We, the family of Peter and Gwenda Dixon, have been informed today that, following a review of their case, a man has been charged with their murder.

"We welcome this development and are grateful to Dyfed Powys Police for keeping us up to date during this investigation. We feel it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
