About 50 passengers escaped injury after a coach crashed into a ditch and overturned on the M5.

The coach driver injured his back in the incident shortly before 10am near Dursley, Gloucestershire this morning.

The coach is registered to Stourbridge and was travelling to Western Super Mare with 54 people of various ages on board, police said.

Stranded passengers were collected and taken away from the scene after the crash between Junctions 13 and 14.

The South West Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said there were a total of seven casualties, who were described as “walking wounded”.

“We were notified at 9.58am that a coach had left the carriageway. It was the only vehicle involved in the incident,” a trust spokesman said.

“There were seven casualties and all of them sustained minor injuries. They are being assessed at the scene to see if they need to be taken to hospital.”

The Highways Agency has closed the southbound carriageway between Junctions 13 and 14.
