A lorry driver was taken to hospital after his lorry flipped and became wedged under a railway bridge in south London on Monday morning.

The incident happened on Station Road, near Orpington station, about 11am.

The driver was hospitalised with non-threatening injuries, police said.

Locals said the bridge has been hit several times in recent years and called for a safety review for large vehicles.

Stephen Sangster, Chairman of the Knoll Residents Association was walking his son past the crash site.

He told The Standard: “It didn’t look like that lorry had even hit the bridge but lost control just ahead of it.

“We’ve had a few strikes of this bridge in recent years so we so probably need to look at whether there are some safety improvements for big vehicles.

“They have recently narrowed this part of the road to put a cycle Lane in which has been causing some issues with large vehicles. But we shouldn’t speculate on the cause.”

The road is closed in both directions with diversions to the 61, 208, 353, R2 and R7 bus routes in place.
