London looks set to escape the onslaught of severe weather forecast for the rest of the UK.

The capital is clear of severe weather warnings right up until Sunday, with temperatures peaking at about 11°C.

Wind gusts could reach 40mph on Saturday but are not expected to reach the 90mph speeds of gale force winds predicted for Northern Ireland and parts of western Scotland.

Another 3,500 people were affected in north-west England and almost 900 were left without power in south Wales.

A search for a missing sailor who fell overboard from a small cargo ship on the River Trent in North Lincolnshire was called off last night in "very poor" conditions, and a 23-year-old woman died in the Republic of Ireland when a tree feel on her car near Mullingar in Co Westmeath.
