'Loch Ness Monster' is discovered at bottom of Scottish lake

Sebastian Mann14 April 2016

These are the first pictures of a major discovery made beneath the surface of Loch Ness.

They unmistakeably show the outline of Nessie of legend and were captured by an underwater robot scanning the deep.

But experts today confirmed it was not the Loch Ness Monster but instead a large prop used in a 1960s film about the mysterious beast.

It was built for the movie The Private Life of Sherlock Homes starring Sir Christopher Lee, but sank during filming.

Loch Ness expert Adrian Shine told the BBC: "We have found a monster, but not the one many people might have expected.”

The 30ft prop sank in 1969 after being built without humps despite warnings this would affect buoyancy.

It swiftly dropped to the bottom of the lake after being floated on the water and has remained there untouched ever since.

Until scientists from Norwegian company Kongsberg Maritime set about mapping the depths of Loch Ness using state-of-the-art sonar and camera equipment.

It is part of tourist board supported project called Operation Groundwater, and the survey has also found a sunken boat as well as evidence the loch may be even deeper than previously thought.

Today’s findings come after reports of sightings of London’s very own Nessie in the River Thames.

At least three videos have emerged in past weeks purporting to show unidentified figures moving through the water.

The sightings have left experts stumped, while many argue speculation is being driven by a simple trick of the camera.
