Lecturers asked 'to shop fanatics'

12 April 2012

The Government is to ask university lecturers to report Muslim students they suspect of involvement in Islamic extremism to police, it has been reported.

The Guardian says that The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is drawing up specific plans to ask universities and colleges to inform on students to special branch.

The newspaper said that it had obtained a copy of an 18-page document containing proposals which it said was to be sent to universities and colleges by the end of the year.

The paper quoted the document as acknowledging that for some, passing information to special branch would seem like "collaborating with the secret police".

Elsewhere the document spoke of students of "Asian appearance" coming under suspicion, the Guardian claimed.

A spokesman for the DfES said that although guidelines on "good leadership" to tackle radicalism in higher education institutions were being drawn up, details of what they would include had not yet been finalised.

"The guidance has not been finalised, it is pure speculation to say what is going to be included," he said.

"We continue to work with higher education institutions and the guidance will be issued shortly."
