Lawyer slams council for forced Caesarean

A lawyer for the Italian whose baby was taken from her after a forced Caesarean section today attacked Essex county council for trying to keep her name secret.

Alessandra Pacchieri, 35, who suffers from bipolar disorder, is back in Italy and wants a “second chance” to prove she could care for her daughter with the support of her family there.

After the council failed to convince a High Court judge to keep Ms Pacchieri’s name secret, lawyer Stefano Oliva said: “This is the latest proof that they are trying to block a press campaign which irritates them because it is trying to find out the truth and find out who is responsible.” He said Ms Pacchieri hoped to win back custody and raise the girl “under supervision”, or send the child to live in the US with the sister of her ex-husband.

After the birth in Essex in August last year, the baby was taken into care and is expected to be adopted. Ms Pacchieri had been sectioned and the Court of Protection granted an NHS trust permission for the Caesarean “because of concerns about risks to mother and child”.
