A further 108,069 Covid cases and 359 deaths have been recorded in the Government’s latest daily figures.
Last Wednesday there were 129,587 new cases and 398 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test.
652,469 people had a confirmed positive test result over the past seven days - a week-on-week decrease of 37.2 per cent.
There have been 1,865 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test over the past week. This shows an increase of 8.2% compared to the previous 7 days.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 177,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
Mr Johnson, speaking to the House of Commons after a tumultuous PMQS, said that working from guidance, a requirement to wear face masks and the use of Covid passports in some settings would be dropped.
He said the Government had taken a “different path” to much of Europe and the “data are showing that, time and again, this Government got the toughest decisions right”.
People will no longer be told to work from home and, from Thursday next week when Plan B measures lapse, mandatory Covid certification will end, Mr Johnson said.
Face masks will no longer be worn in classrooms from Thursday and will no longer be needed in corridors from January 27.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the Commons: “Having looked at the data carefully, the Cabinet concluded that once regulations lapse the Government will no longer mandate the wearing of face masks anywhere.
“From tomorrow, we will no longer require face masks in classrooms and the Department for Education will shortly remove national guidance on their use in communal areas.”
